My husband was born and raised in Turkiye and is often homesick for Turkish cuisine. As such, we often find ourselves at a local Turkish restaurant on our trips near and far. Sultan Kebab and Falafel in Blackhawk has the best Turkish food I've had in all of California--and I've had it all. The restaurant is stylish, modern, spotless, and you can tell a lot of thought was given to the design. The hospitality is unmatched. It was our first time here and as we felt as welcome as the regulars and there were A LOT of regulars. The menu is accommodating to all and well-focused on grilled proteins and vegetables. They use high-quality ingredients and execute with excellence. We started with muhammara and grilled octopus. The muhammara is irresistible! I'm no expert here and I'm usually lukewarm about muhammara, but oh man I couldn't stop scooping this up with the warm pita. The grilled octopus was absolutely succulent and perfectly cooked. It comes lightly dressed with a house made vinaigrette and is served atop lettuce and tomatoes. The tangy vinaigrette tied all of the components together deliciously. For mains we ordered the lamb doner plate and sultan salad with chicken kebab. The lamb doner plate is outstanding. Chef's kiss for this one! It comes with rice, salad, hummus, and pita bread. The lamb is incredibly succulent especially for doner style preparation. My husband usually likes his doner plates but he raved about this one. Really solid and incredibly delicious. The sultan salad is just like the best salad you can imagine. Honestly. It is so well balanced in its flavor, proportions, and ingredients. This is not one of those afterthought salads that are just on the menu to check a box. This salad... I can't wait to have this salad again! (I know, I also can't believe I just said that about a salad. I fully realize I'm talking about a salad. It's that good!) I'd be amiss if I didn't mention the value. The portions are very generous. If I had the ability to order just one starter, that would be plenty. Half of the doner plate was lamb and the salad came with four (yes, FOUR) chicken kebab skewers. Fittingly, the takeout containers are self-help and you'll want to use them and save room for dessert! Ok, for dessert, we had everything, and it's all to die for. The way the desserts are displayed--you just cannot resist. Be sure to add the Turkish ice cream to whatever you can; it will elevate the experience even more. I've got to say, when I saw the five-star rating for Sultan Kebab & Falafel, I definitely raised an eyebrow. Now, after such an all-around wonderful experience, my eyebrow is back down, my belly is full, and my taste buds are as happy as can be. A very well-deserved five-star rating!

Ordered takeout and ate some as we were given complimentary Turkish tea. The tea was mildly flavored and was my very first time trying Turkish tea--I liked it. I got the lamb shish kebab and was surprised how tender it was. I liked my kebab however thought it needed more seasoning to make it shine a bit more--however nothing a little bit of the hot sauce given couldn't fix. Service was friendly and fast. Definitely coming back to try the other dishes and desserts they offer. The ambience is a mix of a standard order up front then sit down type of restaurant. They also have some dessert arrangements that they seem to make in the morning.

So I think the yummy chicken burger is chicken adana shaped and cooked into a burger patty instead of a kabob. So juicy. Enjoy spicy food but sometimes, simply but also well seasoned food is a nice break for my scorched palate and rumbly tummy. Also, love a good burger but sometimes want a lighter alternative to beef. This chicken burger fits the bill. Has enough heft to satisfy the hangry pains without the bloated greasy aftermath of a beef burger. No food coma either. Only suggestion, would love to try a seafood burger. Make a patty the same way but with salmon and/or shrimp instead of chicken. Ps: Their fries are good, too. But like McD's fries better when eaten hot.

This new addition to east Danville serves up Mediterranean/Turkish cuisine but is under separate ownership than the Pleasanton and west Danville "Sultans", and takes the space previously occupied by In The Mix. As you walk in note the decorative wood detailing around the cases, the olive tree to the right of the door, and the murals made into wall paper throughout. Pay particular attention to the icon of Sultan who appears to be winking at the customers. Service - There are always several workers taking orders, prepping desserts, or serving delicious complimentary tea in tulip shaped tea glasses. Aldana Plate - Lamb and beef combo ground and grilled medium rare with nice blend of Turkish seasonings. The rice was perfectly done and a side med salad and hummus finished the plate. Wraps - Key to these are that they are huge and filled with meat and fresh vegetables. Makes for two meals for most. Rice Bowls - A unique addition and different from the plates in that you get chickpeas rather than hummus. Desserts - Too numerous and colorful to ignore so need to try as many as you can. Chocolate Baklava - Rich and chocolaty with soaked and crispy phyllo. Kunefe - Our table's favorite is a traditional Middle Eastern dessert, made with spun pastry called kataifi, soaked in a sweet, sugar-based syrup called attar, and layered with cheese. When warmed you'll enjoy the crispy exterior and savory middle. Sheker Pare - A donut like dough fried and soaked in syrup. Reminiscent of a a version of gulab jamem but a bit heavier dough. Perfect with tea but because of the sweetness only in measured amounts. Overall - A great addition to Danville's eateries and a regular stop on my list.
